With agricultural policy now firmly behind driving sustainable farming practices, the 2024 British Crop Production Council (BCPC) Congress will address how this will shape the future of agriculture.
Returning to the Cedar Court Hotel, Harrogate on 26-27 November, a key theme will be the balance between ensuring farmers continue producing enough nutritious food for a growing population, while protecting our environment.
BCPC General Manager, Julian Westaway says the event includes an impressive line-up of speakers from government, regulators, leading commercial companies, organisations and academia. “These industry leaders and experts will share their knowledge on a wide range of topics related to issues from pesticide regulation, crop production and sustainability to pest control technologies, IPM findings and more.”
The first morning focuses on discussions around the Government’s Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI). It has provided several attractive options for taking land out of food production to boost biodiversity, soil health and mitigating the effects of climate change. But how will this shift in farm policy impact land use, and could it potentially be detrimental to the country’s food security?
The afternoon splits into two sessions: one looking at the regulatory framework that is evolving to support the adoption of the various components of integrated pest management (IPM) such as biocontrol and precision applications.
The second stream looks at how the latest science is being put into practice, with examples such as precision application and making best use of new emerging knowledge and technologies.
On the final day, the future of pesticides becomes the morning’s central theme, while the afternoon focuses on how HSE’s Chemical Regulation Division is looking to manage the approval process of plant protection products and biocides.
