Grimme has revamped the Matrix precision seeder range with the latest generation of the 12- and 18-row models.
It offers a compact design, optimised weight distribution, and driver relief in the form of adjustment options and assistance systems. It will go into full production next year and suitable for seed beets, canola and root chicory.
Revised single row seeding unit
For weight optimisation and spacing of the seed, the revision of the seeding unit sees the parallelogram made of hardened cast aluminium.
The lower weight combined with increased rigidity is said to improve adaptation to the ground contour. The parallelogram is equipped with maintenance-free plastic bearings.
Grimme states that the increased importance of mechanical weed control makes precise, central placement of the seed in the row necessary. A protected optical sensor is found inside the seeding coulter.
The sensor detects and counts beet, canola and root chicory seed, as well as possible blockages of the seeding coulter to the driver.
New interchangeable seeding coulter system
The modular designs of the single row seeding unit means the matrix can be converted from conventional seeding to mulch seeding. Furthermore, the row spacing can be changed from 50cm to 45cm to adapt to customer requirements.
The patent-pending coulter changing system has been developed to change with one screw loosened and one removed to replace the seeding coulters. It can then be removed downwards to make the changeover easier.
The height of the entire cutting disk can be adjusted by 1cm to ensure that the cutting disks can be used for longer – this can be adjusted in simple steps.
Tool-free adjustment
The frame and single row concept allow the matrix to be adjusted without tools and without having to move between the rows.
The running wheels can be folded up and locked into place for maintenance and cleaning work.
Optional clod clearers can be set at 6 different heights using a hole grid with a cotter pin. The clod clearers are no longer mounted on the main frame but in front of each individual seeding unit. The height of the clod clearers can be set individually for each row.
The coulter pressure can be adjusted in five different stages from 0 to 120kg using an accessible handle and the seeding depth can be easily and precisely defined in 0.5cm increments from 0-5cm using a lever.
The intensity of the rubberized intermediate press wheel as well as the discformed furrow closers and caster wheels can be adjusted using a lever.
Operating and assistance systems
For seed placement at different driver speeds, a radar sensor for slip-free speed detection has been installed centrally under the main frame.
With the Grimme Digital Interface (GDI), operators can monitor and change the adjustable parameters. To maximise yield and save seed, Clever Planting is on board as standard, and Section Control is available as an option.
Within the machine width, each seed is placed in a triangular formation for an optimised crop distribution. The creation of so-called turnpike rows increases the seeding rate in defined rows towards the edge of the field, limiting possible feeding damage to the outer rows.
It is also possible to create ‘harvest windows’ during seeding. Seeding is interrupted for a certain area. The resulting marking helps the harvester driver find the right match of rows in relation to the seeding process.
