The new PGRO Recommended List for Combining Peas and Beans underlines the benefits to growers of investment by breeders as yield, agronomy and disease resistance continue to improve.
“Our spring bean varieties take the top four places in the Recommended List as they move ahead of older varieties,” comments Theo Labuda, Managing Director of LSPB (LS Plant Breeders Ltd). “Lynx tops the spring bean list again with the highest yield and a downy mildew rating of ‘7’ that is only matched by its newly-listed stable mate Mallory.
“But while seed of Mallory will not be generally available to growers until next season, Lynx is set to be the most popular variety on farms this coming spring along with LSPB’s Fanfare and Vertigo, also fully recommended.
“We are also very pleased to see that our newly listed large blue peas Bluetime and Blueman are at the top of the PGRO combining pea list with Blueman having a highest possible ‘9’ rating for downy mildew.
“Our other large blue Campus remains on the list as outclassed – a listing that belies its position in the marketplace with over 20% of the large blues certified in the UK. Importantly, it has an excellent reputation with end users, such as micronizers, as well being as popular with growers due to its standing power and harvestability. We firmly believe trade commitment and grower demand will continue to drive its commercial success.
“Finally Our Marrowfat variety, Aikido, maintains its position as the leading variety in its class and is fully recommended.”
