The 2019 Pulse Roadshows continued PGRO’s association with Syngenta as they travelled through the major pulse growing regions to bring the latest research and agronomy advice to growers, agronomists and all involved with the crop.
The five presentations covered a comprehensive range of topics, starting with a review of a challenging 2018 seen in the light of Syngenta’s trials and observations, and presented by Simon Jackson and Max Newbert of Syngenta
This was followed by Graham Redman of The Andersons Centre, who gave the audience a thought-provoking evaluation of the threats and opportunities for UK pulses post-Brexit .
Next were three papers from the PGRO team of technical experts with Becky Howard looking at Integrated Pest Management (IPM), Stephen Belcher presenting the both theory and PGRO’s experiences with intercropping, and Lea Herold examining the benefits of cover crops to soil health.
Roger Vickers, PGRO chief executive, commented that, “the well-attended Pulse Roadshows have become an annual fixture for pulse growers wanting to catch up on the latest research and agronomy advice. They underline the fact that, in any likely Brexit scenario, UK pulses have a strong future … they are sustainable, they improve long term sustainability of arable cropping, they are environmentally sound, and they improve the profitability of the whole rotation.”
